Vietnam exported about US$10.3 billion of goods to India, up 14.2% from the previous year.

That makes Vietnam a market worth examining for Indian businesses looking to diversify sourcing relationships in Asia.

“What Can Indian Businesses Source from Vietnam?”

Vietnam already has substantial export capacity across several manufacturing categories.

In 2025, Vietnam’s exports to India included approximately:

Telephones and components: US$2.1 billion

Computers, electronics and components: US$1.7 billion

Machinery, equipment and spare parts: US$1.05 billion

Base metals and products: US$884 million

Chemicals: US$402 million

Plastic products: US$280 million

Transport equipment and components: US$252 million

Textiles and garments: US$220 million

Textile, footwear and leather inputs: US$185 million

Several of these categories also recorded strong year-on-year growth. For example, Vietnamese exports to India of plastic products increased by more than 50%, chemicals by more than 20%, textiles and garments by nearly 23%, and transport equipment and components by 24% in 2025.

This does not mean every category is automatically an opportunity for every Indian importer. It shows where an established India–Vietnam commercial supply relationship already exists.

Why Vietnam Is Relevant for Indian Sourcing

Vietnam has developed a substantial manufacturing and export base.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade reported strong export performance in 2025 across computers and electronics, machinery, textiles, footwear and other manufactured products. Imports into Vietnam have also been heavily oriented toward machinery, equipment, components and production inputs, reflecting the country’s integrated manufacturing and export ecosystem.

For Indian businesses, this creates several potential sourcing routes.

1. Electronics and Electrical Products

Electronics is one of the largest Vietnam-to-India trade categories.

Indian businesses involved in electronics distribution, components, consumer products, manufacturing or technology supply chains can examine Vietnamese suppliers for specific products and components.

The important question is not simply whether Vietnam manufactures a product, but whether a supplier can meet the Indian buyer’s:

specification → certification → quantity → price → quality → delivery requirement.

2. Machinery and Industrial Components

Vietnam exported more than US$1 billion of machinery, equipment and related products to India in 2025.

This makes industrial machinery, equipment and components another area worth investigating, particularly for Indian manufacturers and distributors seeking additional Asian sourcing relationships.

3. Textiles and Garments

Vietnam is also a major textile and garment manufacturing economy.

India already imported more than US$220 million of Vietnamese textiles and garments in 2025, while textile, footwear and leather inputs added another US$185 million.

For Indian businesses, the opportunity could extend beyond finished garments to selected fabrics, inputs, components and specialised textile products.

4. Chemicals and Plastic Products

Vietnam’s exports of chemicals to India reached about US$402 million in 2025, while plastic products reached approximately US$280 million. Both categories recorded significant growth.

These are areas where product specifications, regulatory compliance, quality documentation and HS-code classification become particularly important.

5. Transport Equipment and Components

Vietnam’s exports of transport equipment and components to India increased 24% in 2025, reaching approximately US$252 million.

This could be relevant for Indian automotive, engineering and component businesses looking for specific products or supplier relationships.

Vietnam Is Not Simply a “China Alternative”

The sourcing decision should not be reduced to replacing one country with another.

Vietnam has its own manufacturing strengths, supplier networks, cost structures, regulatory environment and production capabilities.

For an Indian buyer, the better approach is:

Product Requirement → Vietnam Supplier Search → Supplier Verification → Sample → Compliance Check → Commercial Negotiation → Trial Order → Long-Term Sourcing

The objective should be to identify where Vietnam offers a genuine commercial advantage for a particular product.

What About the India–ASEAN Trade Agreement?

India and ASEAN have the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA), which includes Vietnam. The agreement entered into force in 2010.

However, Indian importers should not assume that every Vietnamese product automatically receives a preferential tariff.

Preferential treatment depends on the applicable tariff commitment and whether the product satisfies the relevant rules of origin. India’s official FTA guidance specifies origin requirements, including tariff-classification and regional-value criteria, along with the necessary Certificate of Origin.

Therefore, before placing an order, an importer should check:

Correct HS code

Applicable basic customs duty

AITIGA preferential tariff, if available

Rules of origin

Certificate of Origin requirements

Product-specific Indian regulations

BIS or other mandatory standards where applicable

Labelling and packaging requirements

Import licensing or restrictions

GST and other applicable taxes

Landed cost

The tariff advantage, if any, must be calculated product by product.

Who Could Explore Vietnam as a Sourcing Market?

Vietnam may be particularly relevant for:

Indian manufacturers looking for components or production inputs.

Importers and distributors looking for new Asian suppliers.

Electronics businesses seeking products or components.

Textile and apparel businesses looking for selected products or inputs.

Engineering companies exploring machinery and industrial components.

Consumer-product businesses looking for Vietnamese manufacturing partners.

E-commerce businesses investigating differentiated Asian products.

But the opportunity will vary considerably by product and business model.

What Should an Indian Buyer Ask a Vietnamese Supplier?

Supplier discovery should begin with a clear requirement.

An Indian buyer should ideally define:

Product: What exactly is required?

Specification: What technical or quality standard is required?

Quantity: Trial quantity and expected annual requirement.

Price: Target buying price and acceptable landed cost.

Packaging: Retail, bulk or industrial packaging.

Compliance: Required certificates, testing and standards.

Delivery: Required lead time and destination port.

Commercial Terms: EXW, FOB, CIF or another agreed Incoterm.

Payment: Acceptable payment structure.

Private Label: Whether OEM/ODM or private-label production is required.

A supplier that can manufacture a product is not necessarily a suitable supplier for a particular Indian buyer.

The Market Linkage Opportunity

This is where Vietnam becomes more than a country-level market story.

The opportunity is to connect a specific Indian sourcing requirement with a validated Vietnamese supplier or supplier group.

The process can be:

INDIAN BUSINESS REQUIREMENT
↓
PRODUCT &
